I dis\u00adco\u00adver\u00aded Grossman\u2019s music rela\u00adtively recent\u00adly, through her two more recent albums, Rever\u00adence, and Gol\u00adden Rule, both released on the <span class=\"caps\">RR<\/span> Gems label. I instant\u00adly fell in love with her sound. Fea\u00adturing her regu\u00adlar quar\u00adtet of Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic (gui\u00adtar) Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic (drums) and Gina Schwarz (bass), the music cho\u00adsen for this album has the same feel and vibe to it as her more recent releases, encom\u00adpas\u00adsing all that is bold and beau\u00adtiful about the way she and her band bring tog\u00ade\u00adther a cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading sen\u00adse of inti\u00adma\u00adcy, joy and free\u00addom from the glo\u00adrious music they are performing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #339966; font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt;\">Side A kicks off with a sen\u00adse of urgen\u00adcy. The retro-feel to Grossmann\u2019s music just adds to the vita\u00adli\u00adty of it all. Crisp, spar\u00adk\u00adling, melo\u00addic inven\u00adti\u00adon mixes seam\u00adless\u00adly with the deep groo\u00adves that arri\u00adve quick\u00adly, stay\u00ading pre\u00adsent for the tune\u2019s dura\u00adti\u00adon, allo\u00adwing for the glo\u00adrious\u00adly spon\u00adta\u00adneous solo\u00ading to drift in and out of the title track. \u2018Rising\u2019 con\u00adti\u00adnues in a simi\u00adlar vein, the quar\u00adtet crea\u00adting a luxu\u00adrious atmo\u00adsphe\u00adre that floats and slow\u00adly spills its gifts of life into the wel\u00adco\u00adming con\u00adscious\u00adness. As with all of the tunes here, the solid link bet\u00adween drums and bass, and sax and gui\u00adtar, lea\u00adves a las\u00adting impres\u00adsi\u00adon, not unli\u00adke a late \u201960s ear\u00adly \u201970s impro\u00advi\u00adsa\u00adtio\u00adnal Jan Garbarek\/Terje Ryp\u00addal Quar\u00adtet. Side B has a slight\u00adly less raw edge to it, with the sub\u00adli\u00adme \u2018Chant\u2019 spea\u00adking volu\u00admes in a subt\u00adle, unhur\u00adried way. Allu\u00adring and tim\u00ade\u00adl\u00adess, \u2018Your Pace\u2019 is soulful and begui\u00adling, it\u2019s medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adve melo\u00addy enri\u00adched by the undoub\u00adted con\u00adnec\u00adtion this group of musi\u00adci\u00adans share. The clo\u00adsing pie\u00adce \u2018Peace For All\u2019 fea\u00adtures Gross\u00admann at her best, her sax soulful and con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adti\u00adve, befo\u00adre rea\u00adching out and soaring like a beau\u00adtiful eagle fly\u00ading over the most incre\u00addi\u00adbly stun\u00adning moun\u00adtain sce\u00adn\u00adery. The Egyp\u00adto\u00adlo\u00adgist anoin\u00adted Pha\u00adro\u00adah San\u00adders even named an album after it; an ascen\u00addance at a time when jazz was embra\u00adcing its spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal roots and his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal gra\u00advi\u00adtas: a return to the source in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt; color: #339966;\">The supre\u00adme\u00adly talen\u00adted saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist band\u00adlea\u00adder <strong>Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann<\/strong>, imbued with that same spi\u00adrit of vague con\u00adscious mys\u00adti\u00adcism and expe\u00adri\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, has now named one of her own impres\u00adsi\u00adve Afro\u00adjazz odys\u00adseys after that totem of an influ\u00aden\u00adti\u00adal album. It won\u2019t come as any sur\u00adpri\u00adse to find that the Pha\u00adraoh just hap\u00adpens to be one of Grossmann\u2019s influen\u00adces, along\u00adside such lumi\u00adna\u00adries as John and Ali\u00adce Col\u00adtra\u00adne, Les\u00adter Young and Eric Dol\u00adphy; all of which per\u00adme\u00ada\u00adte throug\u00adhout this sur\u00advey of the Euro\u00adpean jazz star\u2019s recent(ish) work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt; color: #339966;\">A sort of intro\u00adduc\u00adtion for tho\u00adse unfa\u00admi\u00adli\u00adar with an artist who\u2019s spent the last two deca\u00addes on the Euro\u00adpean sce\u00adne, play\u00ading with the likes of Joa\u00adchim and Rolf K\u00fchn, Wolf\u00adgang Rei\u00adsin\u00adges and Tho\u00admas Hei\u00adde\u00adpriem, the impec\u00adca\u00adble Jazz\u00adman label have cho\u00adsen to repre\u00adsent Grossmann\u2019s cata\u00adlo\u00adgue with sui\u00adtes from the 2016 Natu\u00adral Time and 2017 Momen\u00adtum albums; a moie\u00adty almost of com\u00adpli\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt; color: #339966;\">In all a quin\u00adtet of con\u00adgruous tra\u00adver\u00adses, from a duo of albums, Grossman\u2019s own Ele\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon seems a ful\u00adly rea\u00adli\u00adsed, inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adted and flowing oeu\u00advre that could have been recor\u00added all at the same ses\u00adsi\u00adon, only yes\u00adter\u00adday. An adven\u00adture across desert con\u00adtours, on the cara\u00advan trail in search of enligh\u00adten\u00adment and jazz nir\u00adva\u00adna; the impres\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly invo\u00adca\u00adti\u00adve saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist and her trou\u00adpe of regu\u00adlars turn in a fan\u00adta\u00adsti\u00adcal pan\u00ado\u00adr\u00adamic&nbsp;opus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt; color: #339966;\">We start with the lat\u00adter of tho\u00adse albums and a trio of pyra\u00admid back\u00addrop num\u00adbers that pay homage to the Col\u00adtra\u00adnes (espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly Ali\u00adce), the Pha\u00adraoh, Archie Shepp and Green\u00adwich-hip era Albert Ayler. That gui\u00adding light title-track is a ten-minu\u00adte plus extra\u00adva\u00adgan\u00adza of splas\u00adhing drums, oozing and swadd\u00adled sax and mini plu\u00adcked out gui\u00adtar solos. It sounds like the group is on an opu\u00adlent trin\u00adket laden bar\u00adge. At first lin\u00adge\u00adring, trembling and stir\u00adring in mil\u00adder Nile waters, the action hot\u2019s up as the river beco\u00admes more ani\u00adma\u00adted and chop\u00adpy. Gross\u00admann lite\u00adral\u00adly spi\u00adrals towards the stars; gid\u00addi\u00adly blo\u00adwing so fast that her trade\u00admark instru\u00adment turns into a cla\u00adri\u00adnet at one point. Almost easing into the shim\u00adme\u00adry reso\u00adna\u00adting \u2018Rising\u2019, the quar\u00adtet sump\u00adtuous\u00adly treads fur\u00adther along a mys\u00adte\u00adrious pathway. <strong>Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic<\/strong> brushes the sand off his fligh\u00adty drum kit, and <strong>Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic<\/strong>&nbsp;bends and picks out a diz\u00adzy\u00ading frill of notes on gui\u00adtar as Gross\u00admann flit\u00adters and flut\u00adters on ano\u00adther of the\u00adse con\u00adscious trips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt; color: #339966;\">Still gli\u00adding or wal\u00adking that same North Afri\u00adcan jazz geo\u00adgra\u00adphy, both \u2018Your Peace\u2019 and \u2018Peace For All\u2019 may very well have fur\u00adnis\u00adhed ano\u00adther album, but embrace and breath the same spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal to expe\u00adri\u00admen\u00adtal jazz air. Shif\u00adting sands move under\u00adfoot on the first of tho\u00adse dus\u00adky shuff\u00adlers, whilst Eas\u00adtern mys\u00adti\u00adcal chi\u00admes and sere\u00adni\u00adty make way for pro\u00adgres\u00adsi\u00adve soulful sax, suc\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adons of deft gui\u00adtar licks and bur\u00adnis\u00adhed drums on the second of tho\u00adse mirages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; font-size: 12pt; color: #339966;\">Hard\u00adly a sla\u00advish attempt at repro\u00addu\u00adcing Grossmann\u2019s inspi\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons, Ele\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon is an impres\u00adsi\u00adve, evo\u00adca\u00adti\u00adve con\u00adti\u00adnua\u00adtion of tho\u00adse for\u00adbea\u00adrers blue\u00adprint. Over the cour\u00adse of a handful of albums, most\u00adly issued under the radar, Muri\u00adel has been buil\u00adding up this tre\u00admen\u00addous lega\u00adcy in spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal jazz \u2013 long-spun tunes that fea\u00adture her bur\u00adning work on tenor over some very uni\u00adque rhyth\u00admic con\u00adcep\u00adti\u00adons \u2013 usual\u00adly modal, but deli\u00adver\u00aded in a way that\u2019s very fresh, and which often has gui\u00adtar fil\u00adling a place that\u2019s nor\u00admal\u00adly held by pia\u00adno \u2013 so that Grossman\u2019s horn takes off in this fan\u00adta\u00adstic flur\u00adry of rhythm and color!
