Jazz saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann ama\u00adzes with her new album.<\/span> \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d is char\u00adming, uncom\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adted and inspi\u00adred by the past.<\/span><\/strong>

\n<\/a>It was not to be expec\u00adted that Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann, born in Paris in 1971, would matu\u00adre into an important jazz saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist. Becau\u00adse after she moved to Vien\u00adna with her fami\u00adly in 1976, went through various schools the\u00adre and gra\u00addua\u00adted from high school, Gross\u00admann was ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly sup\u00adpo\u00adsed to beco\u00adme a vete\u00adri\u00adna\u00adri\u00adan. In addi\u00adti\u00adon, she had stu\u00addi\u00aded the flu\u00adte for 16 years. At 21, she swit\u00adched to the saxo\u00adpho\u00adne, after finis\u00adhing vete\u00adri\u00adna\u00adry stu\u00addies she dedi\u00adca\u00adted hers\u00adelf to music. Years of try\u00ading fol\u00adlo\u00adwed: she play\u00aded in various R&<\/span>B, funk and jazz bands.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It was only when she moved to Bar\u00adce\u00adlo\u00adna in 2002 that a jazz care\u00ader emer\u00adged. On the advice of pia\u00adnist and com\u00adpo\u00adser Joa\u00adchim K\u00fchn, with whom she often play\u00aded tog\u00ade\u00adther, she went to the Balea\u00adric island of Ibi\u00adza in 2004. The\u00adre she met Miko Wea\u00adver, Prince\u2019s long\u00adtime gui\u00adta\u00adrist, play\u00aded with him and ear\u00adned her living as a hotel musi\u00adci\u00adan. At the same time, Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann put tog\u00ade\u00adther her own band with which she per\u00adfor\u00admed many gigs. From 2007 she pro\u00addu\u00adced her albums and beca\u00adme the label mana\u00adger (\u201cDream\u00adland\u00adre\u00adcords\u201d) and com\u00adpo\u00adser in per\u00adso\u00adnal uni\u00adon. She made her breakth\u00adrough at the age of 36.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get\u00adting star\u00adted com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adtively late, like Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann, means no dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adta\u00adge, espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly in jazz; a John Col\u00adtra\u00adne also gra\u00addu\u00adal\u00adly deve\u00adlo\u00adped into an ace, gai\u00adned world fame in his mid-thir\u00adties. Not the only par\u00adal\u00adlel bet\u00adween the Metho\u00addist son from North Caro\u00adli\u00adna and the Aus\u00adtri\u00adan tea\u00adcher daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Col\u00adtra\u00adnes Impul\u00adse! Phase<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Whoe\u00adver hears Grossmann\u2019s new album \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d imme\u00addia\u00adte\u00adly noti\u00adces that Gross\u00admann is cle\u00adar\u00adly ori\u00aden\u00adted towards the Impul\u00adse! Pha\u00adse Col\u00adtra\u00adnes, so cal\u00adled after the label Impul\u00adse!. It is the peri\u00adod from 1961 when the Afri\u00adcan Ame\u00adri\u00adcan tenor saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist found hims\u00adelf, but found freer forms from the clas\u00adsic com\u00adbo BeBop of the 1950s. He was open to expe\u00adri\u00adments, inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adted the Afri\u00adcan ori\u00adg\u00adins of jazz, for exam\u00adp\u00adle, and ope\u00adned hims\u00adelf up to the spiritual.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coltrane\u2019s light\u00adness in the ear\u00adly six\u00adties appeared as a distant, not too acquie\u00ads\u00adcent echo from Gross\u00admann almost 60 years later, it inspi\u00adred a signa\u00adtu\u00adre work that con\u00adden\u00adsed Coltrane\u2019s music. At the same time, she is inspi\u00adred by works by the com\u00adpo\u00adser Ali\u00adce Col\u00adtra\u00adne, John Coltrane\u2019s second wife, and the pia\u00adnist McCoy Tyner. All of the\u00adse influen\u00adces come tog\u00ade\u00adther on \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d. In con\u00adsul\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon with the artist, the Jazz\u00adman label has recom\u00adbi\u00adned pie\u00adces from two of her albums. So you can find \u201cPeace for All\u201d and \u201cYour Pace\u201d from \u201cNatu\u00adral Time\u201d (2016) as well as \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d, \u201cRising\u201d and \u201cChant\u201d from \u201cMomen\u00adtum\u201d (2017).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Musi\u00adcal stringency<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This does not detract from the musi\u00adcal strin\u00adgen\u00adcy, on the con\u00adtra\u00adry: \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d is even more con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adted than its ori\u00adgi\u00adnal works. Grossmann\u2019s quar\u00adtet, along\u00adside Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic (gui\u00adtar), Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic (drums) and Gina Schwarz on bass, on full power here. The line-up has remain\u00aded sta\u00adble over the past deca\u00adde \u2014 in the mean\u00adti\u00adme has even grown into a quin\u00adtet \u2014 and the total trust sounds good.<\/span><\/p>\n

The five pie\u00adces are full of soul, warm jazz vir\u00adtuo\u00adsi\u00adty and a look at histo\u00adry does not trans\u00adfi\u00adgu\u00adre the past. Grossmann\u2019s saxo\u00adpho\u00adne sound melts into a 45-minu\u00adte dream in which she tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons gent\u00adly and fruitful\u00adly at the same time. The artist not only prays Coltrane\u2019s sound here, but always finds her own modern varia\u00adti\u00adons that are also colo\u00adred by fusi\u00adon and cool jazz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Muri\u00adel Grossmann\u2019s \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d pres\u00adents its\u00adelf immu\u00adne to show-offs and super\u00adfi\u00adci\u00ada\u00adli\u00adty. Very char\u00adming, with a fine spring, it always lea\u00adves space whe\u00adre com\u00adpres\u00adsi\u00adon would be exag\u00adge\u00adra\u00adted. The phra\u00adsing sounds rela\u00adxed and con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adted at the same time.
