Lis\u00adtening to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><em>Quiet Earth<\/em> by Aus\u00adtri\u00adan saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist <span class=\"span-19865\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann<\/span><\/span> one can\u00adnot help but ask if she might be the rein\u00adcar\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon or ava\u00adtar of the late <span class=\"span-5851\"><span class=\"nowrap\">John Col\u00adtra\u00adne<\/span><\/span>. Cer\u00adtain\u00adly that is one hea\u00advy label to place upon Gross\u00admann but, a few minu\u00adtes into the ope\u00adner \u201cWien,\u201d and the\u00adre is litt\u00adle doubt this artist has the pro\u00adper bona fides. The com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon car\u00adri\u00ades that <em>A Love Supre\u00adme<\/em> (Impul\u00adse!, 1965) vibe with a rever\u00adence for the ethe\u00adre\u00adal. She is backed by her long\u00adtime col\u00adla\u00adbo\u00adra\u00adtors, gui\u00adta\u00adrist <span class=\"span-90100\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic<\/span><\/span>, bas\u00adsist <span class=\"span-39919\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Gina Schwarz<\/span><\/span>, and drum\u00admer <span class=\"span-90101\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic<\/span><\/span>, plus orga\u00adnist <span class=\"span-126504\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Llo\u00adrenc Bar\u00adce\u00adlo<\/span><\/span> who came aboard for the pre\u00advious release <em>Rever\u00adence<\/em> (2019). Both recor\u00addings are available as CDs from Dream\u00adland\u00adre\u00adcords or as 200 gram LPs from <span class=\"caps\">RR<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">GEMS<\/span>. \u201cWien\u201d does\u00adn\u2019t par\u00adrot that Col\u00adtra\u00adne mas\u00adter\u00adpie\u00adce, it expands upon the con\u00adcept with Barcel\u00f3\u2019s organ poin\u00adting towards the spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal jazz of <span class=\"span-11572\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Lar\u00adry Young<\/span><\/span>, and Milojkovic\u2019s gui\u00adtar che\u00adwing on some Del\u00adta&nbsp;blues.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">Like every suc\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adon of the Dalai Lama, Grossmann\u2019s music car\u00adri\u00ades not just the pre\u00advious incar\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon but also its lineage. \u201cAfri\u00adcan Call\u201d tra\u00advels back to the roots of jazz to its mother\u00adland, Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic and Schwarz lay\u00ading down the rhyth\u00adms that fuel\u00adled the birth of blues, jazz, and rock. If one need more pro\u00adof of Grossmann\u2019s incar\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon, \u201cPeaceful River\u201d first finds her on sopra\u00adno befo\u00adre swap\u00adping to tenor saxo\u00adpho\u00adne, as its Gos\u00adpel blues expands into a kind of awa\u00adken\u00aded devo\u00adtio\u00adnal music whe\u00adre Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic works his ride cym\u00adbal very much in the man\u00adner of <span class=\"span-8162\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Elvin Jones<\/span><\/span>. The title track opens with Gross\u00admann dra\u00adwing first from <span class=\"span-5818\"><span class=\"nowrap\">Ornet\u00adte Cole\u00adman<\/span><\/span>\u2019s sound befo\u00adre retur\u00adning to the Col\u00adtra\u00adne spi\u00adrit with her sopra\u00adno saxo\u00adpho\u00adne. Her quar\u00adtet blos\u00adsoms with sleek solos by Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic and Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 befo\u00adre a brief saxo\u00adpho\u00adne, bass and drums impro\u00advi\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon acts as a kind of coming attrac\u00adtions pre\u00adview. <em>Mark Cor\u00adro\u00adto, All About&nbsp;Jazz<\/em><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><br>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/ukvibe.org\/album_reviews\/muriel-grossmann-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"caps\">REVIEW<\/span> by Ian Ward in <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">VIBE<\/span>, England&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><br>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\">Let\u2019s start by giving cor\u00adrect love to Tallinn\u2019s <span class=\"caps\">RR<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">GEMS<\/span> Records. They pal\u00adpa\u00adb\u00adly care, don\u2019t they? That care is as cle\u00adar\u00adly felt in their musi\u00adcal choices (Brah\u00adja and Soft Power are just two of their phe\u00adno\u00adme\u00adnal artists) as it is in the design and finish of their pro\u00adduct, as it is in their playful, com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adti\u00adve cus\u00adto\u00admer rela\u00adti\u00adons (see social media). Long may they con\u00adti\u00adnue to fos\u00adter my good\u00adwill towards them and, by my simp\u00adle-brai\u00adned asso\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adon, to their beau\u00adtiful city\u2026hopefully sof\u00adtening my memo\u00adries of a green-gil\u00adled fer\u00adry from Hel\u00adsin\u00adki and a nasty beefsteak.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Quiet Earth\u201d is their new offe\u00adring by the much-loved, Ibi\u00adza-based, Aus\u00adtri\u00adan saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist, Muri\u00adel Gross\u00adman, and her quin\u00adtet con\u00adsis\u00adting of Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic on gui\u00adtar, Llo\u00adren\u00e7 Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 on organ, Gina Schwarz on bass and Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic on drums. It\u2019s the same lin\u00ade\u00adup from last year\u2019s \u201cRever\u00adence\u201d album and the core of her pre\u00advious recor\u00addings. Not sure Gross\u00adman needs any intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> Vibers, her con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adry take on the modal spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal jazz of the mas\u00adters is well docu\u00admen\u00adted and uni\u00adver\u00adsal\u00adly admired.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\">The ope\u00adner, \u201cWien\u201d, was first visi\u00adted on \u201cAwa\u00adke\u00adning\u201d but this ver\u00adsi\u00adon is nota\u00adb\u00adly ful\u00adler and richer. It\u2019s a deep cle\u00adan\u00adse; a soot\u00adhing irri\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon that requi\u00adres a soli\u00adta\u00adry moment of emp\u00adty-hea\u00added, open-hear\u00adted con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adti\u00adon. Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic and Schwarz crea\u00adte a posi\u00adti\u00adve path, Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 warm\u00adly pul\u00adses, Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic washes and Gross\u00admann offers up a fee\u00adling, asking you to per\u00adso\u00adna\u00adli\u00adse that fee\u00adling and ascen\u00addant\u00adly medi\u00adta\u00adte upon it. Unex\u00adpec\u00adted\u00adly, suc\u00adcessful\u00adly, Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic gets the slide out and deli\u00advers a psych blues solo as per late 60\u2019s gen\u00adre-crossing, expe\u00adri\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon. Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 pati\u00adent\u00adly expands upon the idea befo\u00adre a break\u00addown that makes way for Grossmann\u2019s reso\u00adlu\u00adti\u00adon. \u201cWien\u201d is a spi\u00adri\u00adtual\u00adly seam\u00adless 11 minu\u00adtes \u2013 awa\u00adre and pur\u00adpo\u00adseful, not gli\u00adbly happy-clappy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Afri\u00adcan Call\u201d has that titu\u00adlar mobi\u00adli\u00adty, tho\u00adse dancing pat\u00adterns. It\u2019s a sum\u00admons, an invi\u00adte to enga\u00adge, both rhyth\u00admi\u00adcal\u00adly and soulful\u00adly. Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic and Schwarz hold it down tight but free, Stamenkovic\u2019s cym\u00adbals busy it along and Grossmann\u2019s jubilant motif calls its call. Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic, Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 and Gross\u00admann each take an indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal solo, coll\u00adec\u00adtively com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adting the sin\u00adgle exu\u00adberant plea.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\">The ope\u00adning two minu\u00adtes of divi\u00adne air and uns\u00adpo\u00adken rhyth\u00adms that intro\u00addu\u00adce \u201cPeaceful River\u201d are gor\u00adge\u00adous; akin to the feels of San\u00adders on \u201cEle\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon\u201d, a lite\u00adral Ack\u00adnow\u00adled\u00adge\u00adment of the river\u2019s peaceful\u00adness. Overt rhyth\u00adms of the river\u2019s gent\u00adle ebb and flow then appear; becal\u00adming and reques\u00adt\u00ading that we accept, and exalt, our ine\u00advi\u00adta\u00adble onen\u00adess with natu\u00adre. Ethereal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Quiet Earth\u201d is initi\u00adal\u00adly more open, free-er. It jumps into a groo\u00adve, much less free, much more urgent; there\u2019s a funk to it. Stamenkovic\u2019s cym\u00adbals cool\u00adly roll, his bass drum and Schwarz\u2019s bass both just under the beat, pro\u00adpel\u00adling. While Gross\u00admann speaks with expli\u00adcit con\u00adcern, a pain and Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 casts evo\u00adca\u00adti\u00adve sha\u00adde. As is the now-estab\u00adlished for\u00admu\u00adla Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic and Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 take orde\u00adred solos. Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic clean, flat, phat picking; appro\u00adpria\u00adte. Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 jabs, shuf\u00adfles, rope-a-dopes. The final minu\u00adte and a half are free-er again, still tur\u00adbu\u00adlent but offe\u00adring a glim\u00adpse of&nbsp;hope.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\">This album takes us on a wishful, search-for-mea\u00adning, jour\u00adney. It does have that at-onen\u00adess we\u2019d natu\u00adral\u00adly expect from music crea\u00adted in the spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal sanc\u00adtua\u00adry of Ibi\u00adza; a medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adve sin\u00adgle-voice spi\u00adri\u00adtua\u00adli\u00adty that evo\u00adkes hope and posi\u00adti\u00adve ener\u00adgies and allows tho\u00adse of us for\u00adt\u00adu\u00adna\u00adte enough to be able to con\u00adnect with it, to feel heal\u00ading, growth, and uplift. But the\u00adre is also some\u00adthing more deman\u00adding, some\u00adthing that requi\u00adres our (may\u00adbe illu\u00adsi\u00adve) onen\u00adess in order to respond to it; a request that we be awa\u00adre, that we look for posi\u00adti\u00adve trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon, that we look to coll\u00adec\u00adtively heal our\u00adsel\u00adves and our environment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\">Muri\u00adel is hop\u00adeful that we can achie\u00adve this: \u201cI pray for all of us to live a hap\u00adpy, healt\u00adhy, meaningful and uni\u00adfy\u00ading life, with respon\u00adsi\u00adble inten\u00adti\u00adons for our and future generations\u2026May our music ser\u00adve you on your essen\u00adti\u00adal jour\u00adney.\u201d Apt besee\u00adching, as we lea\u00adve 2020 and enter into who-knows-what 2021.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\">And, final\u00adly, a Yulet\u00adide Gree\u00adtings to you all! This album\u2019s got the ama\u00adzing rhyth\u00admic pul\u00adse of Grossman\u2019s pre\u00advious records, but also shifts the sound slight\u00adly too \u2013 as in addi\u00adti\u00adon to the fan\u00adta\u00adstic use of gui\u00adtar by Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic, the set also fea\u00adtures the\u00adse stron\u00adgly swir\u00adling organ lines from Llo\u00adrenc Bar\u00adce\u00adlo \u2013 in a way that makes us ima\u00adgi\u00adne what it might sound like if we ever got to hear tho\u00adse lost jam ses\u00adsi\u00adons bet\u00adween John Col\u00adtra\u00adne and Lar\u00adry Young! Like the pre\u00advious album \u2018Rever\u00adence\u2019, Muri\u00adel recor\u00added it on her Ibi\u00adza island in the quin\u00adtet for\u00admat. Mal\u00adlor\u00adcan orga\u00adnist Llo\u00adren\u00e7 Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 seems to have beco\u00adme a per\u00adma\u00adnent mem\u00adber of the team with which Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann has been working tog\u00ade\u00adther for many&nbsp;years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"auto\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">In her own hand\u00adwrit\u00adten liner notes, Muri\u00adel speaks of the deep imper\u00adfec\u00adtions of our world, which make many feel hel\u00adp\u00adless. She claims that ever\u00adyo\u00adne should look for strength and posi\u00adti\u00adve ener\u00adgy for chan\u00adge in them\u00adsel\u00adves, and her music should help lis\u00adten\u00aders to find hope and that very posi\u00adti\u00adve energy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"auto\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">Well, for me per\u00adso\u00adnal\u00adly, Muri\u00adel Grossmann\u2019s music always evo\u00adkes the most posi\u00adti\u00adve emo\u00adti\u00adons. Quiet Earth, small in volu\u00adme, was no excep\u00adti\u00adon. The album includes only four com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons by Muri\u00adel. In the ope\u00adning song <span class=\"caps\">WIEN<\/span>, the only thing that can be cal\u00adled clas\u00adsi\u00adcal (in a jazz sen\u00adse) is the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon, whe\u00adre, after a saxo\u00adpho\u00adne solo, Milojkovic\u2019s gui\u00adtar, then Barcelo\u2019s organ, and final\u00adly Grossmann\u2019s saxo\u00adpho\u00adne again come to the fore\u00adground. But jud\u00adging by the music, Muriel\u2019s memo\u00adries of the capi\u00adtal of her nati\u00adve Aus\u00adtria are clo\u00adser to the archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adre of Hun\u00addert\u00adwas\u00adser and Haneke\u2019s films than to the idyl\u00adlic land\u00adscapes of impe\u00adri\u00adal Vien\u00adna during the time of Franz Joseph.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-family: calibri;\"><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"auto\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">The com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon <span class=\"caps\">AFRICAN<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">CALL<\/span> with the accen\u00adtua\u00adted work of the rhythm group and bright saxo\u00adpho\u00adne colours looks like an echo of Afri\u00adcan moti\u00adves that occu\u00adp\u00adied the main place in the pre\u00advious album \u2018Rever\u00adence\u2019. The impres\u00adsi\u00adon that the\u00adre was sim\u00adply no place for Afri\u00adcan Call in that album, but here \u201cAfri\u00adca\u201d works well in con\u00adtrast to the Euro\u00adpean \u201cVien\u00adna\u201d.
