It was music with dedi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon, spea\u00adking from the heart. I felt it speaks of past and pre\u00adsent, with joy and hap\u00adpi\u00adness. Ten seconds into lis\u00adtening and I was hoo\u00adked. I was all over the web try\u00ading to find a vinyl copy, but stran\u00adge\u00adly enough the\u00adre was\u00adn\u2019t any available. Wit\u00adhout a second thought we deci\u00added to get in touch with Muri\u00adel and ask how that is pos\u00adsi\u00adble. And behold, befo\u00adre long, we were lis\u00adtening to the pre\u00admix of \u201dGol\u00adden Rule\u201d. I remem\u00adber being insi\u00adde of that record for the first time and having this fee\u00adling you get when you don\u2019t real\u00adly want to lea\u00adve a place any\u00admo\u00adre. This was music per\u00adfor\u00admed with a gre\u00adat artis\u00adtic con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon, inte\u00adgri\u00adty and ener\u00adgy. I felt a genui\u00adne love lis\u00adtening to the first&nbsp;side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">After the record \u201dGol\u00adden Rule\u201d recei\u00adved good reviews, got acco\u00adlades from record coll\u00adec\u00adtors around the world, was voted best record of 2018 by <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">VIBE<\/span> and was nomi\u00adna\u00adted for the Jazz Album Of The Year for the Gil\u00adles Peter\u00adson World\u00adwi\u00adde Awards, Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann and the band were back to their usu\u00adal rou\u00adti\u00adne, per\u00adforming, tou\u00adring and recor\u00adding the fol\u00adlow up to \u201dGol\u00adden Rule\u201d, a for\u00admi\u00adda\u00adble record entit\u00adled \u201dRever\u00adence\u201d. While the record was still in the making, I cal\u00adled Muri\u00adel and told her that it would be gre\u00adat to final\u00adly meet in per\u00adson. Muri\u00adel sug\u00adgested we meet on her forth\u00adco\u00adming tour of the Balea\u00adric Islands in ear\u00adly autumn of 2019. I pro\u00adpo\u00adsed imme\u00addia\u00adte\u00adly to make a short road movie about that tour and that the band should record live if pos\u00adsi\u00adble. The task of cap\u00adtu\u00adring a live per\u00adfor\u00admance at the con\u00adcert pro\u00adved to be impos\u00adsi\u00adble, but she mana\u00adged to book a two-day recor\u00adding ses\u00adsi\u00adon in Mal\u00adlor\u00adca stu\u00addio Caja Del Rui\u00addo with an actu\u00adal Ham\u00admond <span class=\"caps\">B3<\/span>. I remem\u00adber we arri\u00adved one day pri\u00ador to the gig in Mal\u00adlor\u00adca to make a recor\u00adding ses\u00adsi\u00adon the same day. Gina Schwarz \u2014 the bass play\u00ader \u2014 could not make it so ear\u00adly though, and it took Llo\u00adren\u00e7 Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 by sur\u00adpri\u00adse. While warm\u00ading up his fin\u00adgers on the Ham\u00admond he rea\u00adli\u00adzed that Gina was not going to par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adte in the recor\u00adding ses\u00adsi\u00adon and he had to step into her ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry. But after all, Muri\u00adel just wan\u00adted to cap\u00adtu\u00adre the live set and she did it excep\u00adtio\u00adnal\u00adly and with&nbsp;grace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">The set opens in a cool tem\u00adpo when the band enters into a deep medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, play\u00ading \u201d<span class=\"caps\">HAPPINESS<\/span>\u201d with Muri\u00adel picking up the tenor saxo\u00adpho\u00adne in a com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon from her 2016 album \u201dNatu\u00adral Time\u201d, a com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtio\u00adnal embo\u00addi\u00adment and a remin\u00adder of why she caught the wide inte\u00adrest and ima\u00adgi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon of dedi\u00adca\u00adted lis\u00adten\u00aders. When Llo\u00adren\u00e7 picks up the groo\u00adve on the Ham\u00admond bass pedals, you can instant\u00adly feel the ten\u00adsi\u00adon gro\u00adwing and from that moment on, I rea\u00adli\u00adzed it\u2019s going to be one hell of a ride. Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic takes the first solo, play\u00ading intri\u00adca\u00adte bebop lines cou\u00adpled with extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adna\u00adry excur\u00adsi\u00adons into blues. He pays a pas\u00adsio\u00adna\u00adte and heartful homage to his gui\u00adtar heroes \u2014 Wes Mont\u00adgo\u00adme\u00adry, Pat Mar\u00adti\u00adno, Grant Green and Geor\u00adge Ben\u00adson. After the gui\u00adtar solo Muri\u00adel brings the band back into a medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, play\u00ading an airy and atmo\u00adsphe\u00adric solo, taking the road less tra\u00adve\u00adled. The way the band accom\u00adpa\u00adnies Gross\u00admann is sta\u00adte of the art in deli\u00adve\u00adring the true sen\u00adse of the musi\u00adcal expres\u00adsi\u00adon \u201dto accom\u00adpa\u00adny a soloist\u201d. The third soloist, Llo\u00adren\u00e7 Bar\u00adcel\u00f3, dis\u00adplays his deep know\u00adledge and dedi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon for the Ham\u00admond as an instru\u00adment and for the mas\u00adters that play\u00aded it. Barcel\u00f3\u2019s atten\u00adti\u00adon to details, refi\u00adned lan\u00adguage and musi\u00adci\u00adan\u00adship shi\u00adnes through this well exe\u00adcu\u00adted solo, brin\u00adging to mind such icons of the instru\u00adment as Lon\u00adnie Lis\u00adton Smith, Don Pat\u00adter\u00adson, Lar\u00adry Young, Son\u00adny Phil\u00adlips and Richard Groo\u00adve Hol\u00admes. Llo\u00adren\u00e7 Barcel\u00f3\u2019s uni\u00adque way of play\u00ading and thin\u00adking was con\u00adfirm\u00aded in a con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon that I held with him whe\u00adre he explai\u00adned to me how he built up his first Ham\u00admond organ from scratch, buy\u00ading pie\u00adce by pie\u00adce online. All this hea\u00advy-duty play\u00ading is gui\u00added by a ste\u00adady \u201dhand that rocks the crad\u00adle\u201d embo\u00addi\u00aded in the mas\u00adterful, hard swin\u00adging and groo\u00adving man behind the drum set, Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic, the rhythm man who digs deep into a groo\u00adve, embra\u00adcing the per\u00adfor\u00admance as a&nbsp;whole.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">On the second tune \u201d<span class=\"caps\">TRANEING<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">IN<\/span>\u201d all guns are bla\u00adzing. The com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon from her cele\u00adbra\u00adted record \u201dGol\u00adden Rule\u201d is play\u00aded here in a slight\u00adly fas\u00adter tem\u00adpo, a sopra\u00adno saxo\u00adpho\u00adne work\u00adout dedi\u00adca\u00adted to none other than John Col\u00adtra\u00adne. Gross\u00admann takes char\u00adge, dis\u00adplay\u00ading her per\u00adfect melo\u00addic sen\u00adse and sto\u00adrytel\u00adling skill while lea\u00adding the ensem\u00adble into an ener\u00adge\u00adtic trance. The band responds with ela\u00ads\u00adtic mul\u00adti\u00addi\u00adrec\u00adtion\u00adal groo\u00adves, psy\u00adche\u00adde\u00adlic sound\u00adscapes and super\u00adim\u00adpo\u00adsed har\u00admo\u00adnies, which pro\u00adves to be a powerful ending for Side&nbsp;A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">Side B opens up with one of my all-time favou\u00adri\u00adtes \u201d<span class=\"caps\">SUNDOWN<\/span>\u201d, a com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon from the 2019 record \u201dRever\u00adence\u201d, which was at that time only being road tes\u00adted, sin\u00adce this ses\u00adsi\u00adon took place while the recor\u00adding of \u201dRever\u00adence\u201d was still in full flow. I remem\u00adber medi\u00adta\u00adting during the recor\u00adding of this song and drif\u00adting into a sta\u00adte of semi-con\u00adscious\u00adness bet\u00adween the two takes, becau\u00adse I felt so rela\u00adxed, the music detaching me from rea\u00adli\u00adty. In the begin\u00adning Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 gives a hint of an alre\u00ada\u00addy fami\u00adli\u00adar bass line on the upper keys, befo\u00adre he aban\u00addons it at the same time as Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic pulls out the slide, con\u00adfir\u00adming that it wasn\u2019t a one-off when he play\u00aded his stel\u00adlar slide solo on the com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon \u201dWien\u201d from their last 2020 record \u201dQuiet Earth\u201d. While the slide gui\u00adtar in \u201dWien\u201d was play\u00aded more in a Mud\u00addy Waters tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon, here in \u201d<span class=\"caps\">SUNDOWN<\/span>\u201d it ser\u00adves as a cine\u00adma\u00adtic back\u00addrop and coun\u00adter\u00adpoint to Muriel\u2019s gor\u00adge\u00adous, gent\u00adle and soot\u00adhing tenor play\u00ading. Altog\u00ade\u00adther it crea\u00adtes an empowe\u00adring expe\u00adri\u00adence, which real\u00adly allows you to step into a place and a time reflec\u00adting your inner being and inner direc\u00adtion fee\u00adling sub\u00adstan\u00adti\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adnec\u00adted to natu\u00adre and the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">Then you wake from a dream when the band pumps up the tem\u00adpo once again on the vibrant com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon cal\u00adled \u201d<span class=\"caps\">AFRICAN<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">DANCE<\/span>\u201d, which was first recor\u00added for the afo\u00adre\u00admen\u00adtio\u00adned album \u201dNatu\u00adral Time\u201d. Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic gets into the bur\u00adning hard, dri\u00adving up-tem\u00adpo Afro-Cuban rhythm, while Gross\u00admann deli\u00advers motifs and short burst phra\u00adses, this time on the alto saxo\u00adpho\u00adne. Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic and Bar\u00adcel\u00f3 are locked into an infec\u00adtious riff that makes you want to put on your dancing shoes and start jum\u00adping, pum\u00adping and shou\u00adting. It is an inten\u00adse per\u00adfor\u00admance encom\u00adpas\u00adsing the trade\u00admark sound of this band, which gets under your skin after just a few&nbsp;bars.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">The album clo\u00adses with ano\u00adther tune from the record \u201dRever\u00adence\u201d that was also a part of a live set at that time, an impec\u00adca\u00adble pie\u00adce of music cal\u00adled \u201d<span class=\"caps\">UNION<\/span>\u201d. Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic plays a gre\u00adat Mile\u00adsi\u00adan groo\u00adve and the who\u00adle band gets into the trance, while Gross\u00admann deli\u00advers the melo\u00addy in shaman-like fashion. It is free from fears and total\u00adly dis\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adted from belief sys\u00adtems and in its cul\u00admi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon you can feel the divi\u00adne spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal con\u00adnec\u00adted\u00adness of this group as they deli\u00adver an exer\u00adcise in sound that embo\u00addies a&nbsp;<span class=\"caps\">UNION<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">In the con\u00adtext of this record and the pre\u00advious ones, we can cle\u00adar\u00adly talk about Muri\u00adel Grossmann\u2019s music as a style of music that is distinc\u00adti\u00adve and reco\u00adgnizable from the very first note. If the\u00adre is any remo\u00adte\u00adly posi\u00adti\u00adve side to the situa\u00adti\u00adon that the who\u00adle world has found its\u00adelf in, it is that this record is able to see the light of day, which other\u00adwi\u00adse would have been unli\u00adkely, sin\u00adce Muri\u00adel alre\u00ada\u00addy had her fol\u00adlow up to \u201dRever\u00adence\u201d com\u00adpo\u00adsed and rea\u00addy for recor\u00adding. As it tur\u00adned out, both records \u201dQuiet Earth\u201d and \u201dUni\u00adon\u201d got their oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to be heard rather than being shel\u00adved deep in the recor\u00adding vaults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">As Muri\u00adel told me on the&nbsp;road:&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #008000;\">\u201cTrue kind\u00adness and com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon are ari\u00adsing from the under\u00adstan\u00adding that all things are inter\u00adac\u00adting inter\u00adde\u00adpendent\u00adly, are con\u00adnec\u00adted but con\u00adstant\u00adly chan\u00adging, somehow imper\u00adma\u00adnent. I do it mys\u00adelf, often. And with album releases this year such as Coltrane\u2019s Love Supre\u00adme Live in Seat\u00adtle, and reis\u00adsues like Man\u00adkun\u00adku Quartet\u2019s Yakhal Inko\u00admo, just to name a cou\u00adple of examp\u00adles, we can see why. If, howe\u00adver, we turn our atten\u00adti\u00adon to the pre\u00adsent day, it is incre\u00addi\u00adbly hear\u00adtening to know that the spi\u00adrit of Col\u00adtra\u00adne lives on. Two artists, in par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar, embo\u00addy the true mea\u00adning of the master\u2019s music in their own very spe\u00adcial way; saxo\u00adpho\u00adnists Nat Birch\u00adall and Muri\u00adel Grossmann.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">Over the last few years, Birch\u00adall and Gross\u00admann have both mana\u00adged to suc\u00adcessful\u00adly shi\u00adne a beau\u00adtiful light on Coltrane\u2019s lega\u00adcy, whilst com\u00adpo\u00adsing and per\u00adforming new ori\u00adgi\u00adnal music that is undoub\u00adted\u00adly their own, breathing new life into the style of music that Col\u00adtra\u00adne, and others, began some fif\u00adty-plus years&nbsp;ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">Having lis\u00adten\u00aded to, and tho\u00adrough\u00adly enjoy\u00aded, Muri\u00adel Grossmann\u2019s last few albums, it\u2019s par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly plea\u00adsing to hear a slight chan\u00adge of direc\u00adtion on her latest release, \u201cUni\u00adon\u201d. <span class=\"caps\">OK<\/span>, so may\u00adbe the words \u2018slight chan\u00adge of direc\u00adtion\u2019 are a litt\u00adle too strong, but I do detect a gent\u00adle shift in empha\u00adsis on this recor\u00adding. It is per\u00adhaps more down to the band line-up and choice of instru\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon more than any\u00adthing else, but the\u00adre seems to me to be a richer, ful\u00adler, more uncom\u00adpro\u00admi\u00adsing vibe to this ses\u00adsi\u00adon that I real\u00adly like. It\u2019s an incre\u00addi\u00adbly powerful sound that if any\u00adthing, harks back to some of Elvin Jones\u2019 clas\u00adsic 70\u2019s Jazz Machi\u00adne albums like \u201cRemem\u00adbrance\u201d, rather than the afo\u00adre\u00admen\u00adtio\u00adned inspi\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons from the \u201960s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\"><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Uni\u00adon\u201d kicks off with the very impres\u00adsi\u00adve \u201cHap\u00adpi\u00adness\u201d, a tune ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly recor\u00added on Grossmann\u2019s 2016 release \u201cNatu\u00adral Time\u201d. Rado\u00admir Milojkovic\u2019s focus\u00adsed gui\u00adtar and Uros Stamenkovic\u2019s pun\u00adchy drums get straight into the groo\u00adve. Grossmann\u2019s cos\u00admic melo\u00addy lines work par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly well with the mel\u00adlow, bass-dri\u00adven chord\u00adal impro\u00advi\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adons of Lorenc Barcelo\u2019s Ham\u00admond organ. The band are so tog\u00ade\u00adther, jour\u00adney\u00ading on and out\u00adward as the tune pro\u00adgres\u00adses in its own com\u00adpel\u00adling magni\u00adficence. \u201cTran\u00ade\u00ading In\u201d is a wild romp through more unchar\u00adte\u00adred ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry, Grossmann\u2019s sopra\u00adno sax soaring abo\u00adve an almost Alt\/Country music gui\u00adtar riff. Gui\u00adtar and Ham\u00admond solos fea\u00adture stron\u00adgly, cut\u00adting in against the ever-pre\u00adsent full-steam-ahead drums. A back\u00addrop of per\u00adcus\u00adsive tex\u00adtures and spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal sounds greet the lis\u00adte\u00adner on the medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adve \u201cSun\u00addown\u201d. Ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly recor\u00added for the 2019 album \u201cRever\u00adence\u201d, an empowe\u00adring expe\u00adri\u00adence flows through the music, subt\u00adle slide gui\u00adtar adding to the atmo\u00adsphe\u00adre of this won\u00adderful tune. \u201cAfri\u00adcan Dance\u201d revels in its cele\u00adbra\u00adto\u00adry vibe, its upbeat Afro-Cuban rhyth\u00adms punc\u00adtua\u00adted per\u00adfect\u00adly by Grossmann\u2019s gor\u00adge\u00adous\u00adly effer\u00adve\u00ads\u00adcent and soulful tenor sax play\u00ading. The title track \u201cUni\u00adon\u201d is trance-like in natu\u00adre, and Grossmann\u2019s stun\u00adning, uplif\u00adting sax play\u00ading takes this pie\u00adce into a dif\u00adfe\u00adrent stra\u00adto\u00adsphe\u00adre altog\u00ade\u00adther. The spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal con\u00adnec\u00adted\u00adness of the who\u00adle band plays a major part in making this tune so com\u00adpel\u00adling and rewarding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">And so, once more, Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann has deli\u00adver\u00aded a won\u00adderful album for our ears, hearts, and minds, to sit back and enjoy. As with many things in life, this music allows us to look back, whilst stay\u00ading in the moment of the here-and-now. And it is such a beau\u00adtiful moment. You can\u2019t help but go with the flow.
