          The album Devo\u00adti\u00adon, the fif\u00adte\u00adenth stu\u00addio album in the dis\u00adco\u00adgra\u00adphy of the Aus\u00adtri\u00adan saxo\u00adpho\u00adnist and com\u00adpo\u00adser Muri\u00adel Gross\u00adman, who has been living and working on the Spa\u00adnish resort island of Ibi\u00adza for many years, marks her tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon under the wing of the Ame\u00adri\u00adcan label Third Man Records. Pre\u00advious\u00adly, Muri\u00adel published her works main\u00adly on her own label Dream\u00adland Records or the Esto\u00adni\u00adan RR<\/span> Gems. This is not the only inno\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon asso\u00adcia\u00adted with this pro\u00adject. In Grossman\u2019s quar\u00adtet, along\u00adside her long\u00adtime regu\u00adlar part\u00adners Rado\u00admir Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic (gui\u00adtars) and Uros Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic (drums), Bar\u00adce\u00adlo\u00adna-based orga\u00adnist Abel Boquera appeared during the recor\u00adding of Devo\u00adti\u00adon. Muri\u00adel hers\u00adelf looks like a real mul\u00adti-instru\u00admen\u00adta\u00adlist in this album: in addi\u00adti\u00adon to the saxo\u00adpho\u00adnes fami\u00adli\u00adar from her pre\u00advious works (here she uses alto, tenor and sopra\u00adno) and flu\u00adte, Gross\u00admann plays the dou\u00adble bass here, as well as on tam\u00adbou\u00adra, kalim\u00adba, har\u00admo\u00adni\u00adum and various per\u00adcus\u00adsion instruments.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

          Gross\u00adman had pre\u00advious\u00adly had a pen\u00adchant for lar\u00adge, exten\u00added com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons, but with Devo\u00adti\u00adon she sim\u00adply out\u00addid hers\u00adelf. Of the seven tracks on the album, not a sin\u00adgle one is shorter than ten minu\u00adtes, and the pro\u00adgram of the hour and a half album opens with the gran\u00addio\u00adse play Abso\u00adlu\u00adte Truth, which lasts almost 22 minu\u00adtes. This, one might say, is the cal\u00adling card of the album. The spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal com\u00adpo\u00adnent of Muri\u00adel Grossmann\u2019s work, coming from Col\u00adtra\u00adne and reflec\u00adted in the album\u2019s title, here visi\u00adbly mer\u00adges with hard\u00adbop idi\u00adoms and modal jazz under an almost fun\u00adky drum rhythm. Repla\u00adcing each other as the com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon deve\u00adlo\u00adps, the tenor saxo\u00adpho\u00adne of the lea\u00adder of the quar\u00adtet, the gui\u00adtar of Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic, and the Ham\u00admond organ of Boquera, who is unu\u00adsual\u00adly orga\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly included in this ensem\u00adble, per\u00adform excel\u00adlent solos. Then comes Calm, my per\u00adso\u00adnal favo\u00adri\u00adte of the album, with fan\u00adta\u00adsti\u00adcal\u00adly expres\u00adsi\u00adve play\u00ading from Gross\u00adman and equal\u00adly powerful parts from Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic. Against the back\u00adground of this pie\u00adce, the next com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon Care, in a soul-jazz style, see\u00admed to me at first a litt\u00adle bland, but the fiery gui\u00adtar solos, cou\u00adpled with the excel\u00adlent work of Boquera and Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advich, began to blur this impres\u00adsi\u00adon, and Grossman\u2019s solo chan\u00adged ever\u00ady\u00adthing radically.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

          It is curious that in terms of style Muri\u00adel does not seem to offer any\u00adthing revo\u00adlu\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adry. But from the alre\u00ada\u00addy fami\u00adli\u00adar \u201cbricks\u201d, with the talent of an out\u00adstan\u00adding archi\u00adtect, she assem\u00adbles a buil\u00adding that is equal\u00adly har\u00admo\u00adnious and spec\u00adta\u00adcu\u00adlar, both in struc\u00adtu\u00adre and in deco\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve ele\u00adments. An exam\u00adp\u00adle of this is lite\u00adral\u00adly any pie\u00adce on the album, and a com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon such as Know\u00adledge and Wis\u00addom adds ele\u00adgant Indi\u00adan orna\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon to the blues-rock accents, lar\u00adge\u00adly due to the flu\u00adte part from Muri\u00adel Gross\u00adman. On the title pie\u00adce, Devo\u00adti\u00adon, Milojkovic\u2019s gui\u00adtar con\u00adti\u00adnues in a blues-rock vein, but Gross\u00adman and Boquera graceful\u00adly return the pie\u00adce to a soul-jazz direc\u00adtion. For a spec\u00adta\u00adcu\u00adlar fina\u00adle, Muri\u00adel saved the com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon Mother of All, whe\u00adre all the mem\u00adbers of the quar\u00adtet are so con\u00advin\u00adcing that they only con\u00adfirm the con\u00advic\u00adtion for\u00admed during this hour and a half of lis\u00adtening to the album that this is Muri\u00adel Grossman\u2019s best album in recent years.
