Muri\u00adel Grossmann\u2019s repu\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon as a lea\u00adding prac\u00adti\u00adtio\u00adner of spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal jazz that groo\u00adves, deep\u00adly groo\u00adves, has grown ste\u00adadi\u00adly with every new recor\u00adding. From ear\u00adly albums such as \u2018Quar\u00adtet\u2019 in 2008 to \u2018Birth of the Mys\u00adtery\u2019 in 2010 to her brea\u00adkout album \u2018Gol\u00adden Rule\u2019 in 2018 and her recent \u2018Devo\u00adti\u00adon\u2019 in 2023, Grossmann\u2019s music has won acco\u00adlades from cri\u00adtics and ado\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from lis\u00adten\u00aders around the glo\u00adbe. From her recor\u00adding stu\u00addio and her own label Dream\u00adland\u00adre\u00adcords on the island of Ibi\u00adza, through to the dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon of inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal music labels inclu\u00adding <span class=\"caps\">RRGEMS<\/span> in Euro\u00adpe, Jazz\u00adman from the <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span>, and more recent\u00adly Pas\u00adse\u00adri\u00adne Records and Third Man Records from the <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span>, Grossmann\u2019s music has won devo\u00adted fans the world over. If, howe\u00adver, you are a new lis\u00adte\u00adner, you will find with this album that you have come to a place whe\u00adre con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adry spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal jazz meets hap\u00adpi\u00adness. Serious happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">In her inter\u00adview with All About Jazz wri\u00adter Dave Kauf\u00adman, Muri\u00adel Gross\u00admann comm\u00adents on hap\u00adpi\u00adness, not\u00ading that \u2018if we ask our\u00adsel\u00adves when we are hap\u00adpiest, it is sure\u00adly when we have made some\u00adbo\u00addy hap\u00adpy,\u2019 and she goes on to quo\u00adte the Dalai Lama: \u2018When we<span class=\"bcTruncateMore\"> feel love and kind\u00adness towards others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it also helps us to deve\u00adlop inner hap\u00adpi\u00adness and&nbsp;peace.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">Lis\u00adtening to the music on \u2018The Light of the Mind\u2019, Grossmann\u2019s 16th album as lea\u00adder, one feels that hap\u00adpi\u00adness is the core of this recor\u00adding. It is hap\u00adpi\u00adness achie\u00adved through recipro\u00adci\u00adty, inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtion, devo\u00adti\u00adon, rever\u00adence and prac\u00adti\u00adce. Gross\u00admann has explai\u00adned to review\u00aders of her pre\u00advious albums the importance of Bud\u00addhism in her dai\u00adly life and the role of medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon and post-medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon prac\u00adti\u00adce. The titles of her recent albums and com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons reflect this. Glan\u00adce through the titles on \u2018The Light of the Mind\u2019 and you will begin to app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adte the con\u00adnec\u00adtion bet\u00adween Bud\u00addhist thought and Grossmann\u2019s crea\u00adti\u00adon of spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal&nbsp;jazz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">The ope\u00adning track \u2018Poin\u00adting Out, Part I\u2019 beg\u00adins with a minu\u00adte and a half of mood-set\u00adting Fen\u00adder Rho\u00addes, Ham\u00admond <span class=\"caps\">B3<\/span> organ and Moog by key\u00adboar\u00addist Abel Boquera befo\u00adre the rest of the quar\u00adtet joins in. In Bud\u00addhist thought, poin\u00adting out is an intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to awa\u00adre\u00adness, an exer\u00adcise to direct one\u2019s under\u00adstan\u00adding towards the natu\u00adre of mind. When Grossmann\u2019s tenor saxo\u00adpho\u00adne enters accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by Uros Stamenkovic\u2019s soft\u00adly rol\u00adling drums and cym\u00adbals and Rado\u00admir Milojkovic\u2019s quiet gui\u00adtar, the lis\u00adte\u00adner is invi\u00adted to join them in con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adti\u00adon and pre\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon for the num\u00adbers to come. The title track which fol\u00adlows imme\u00addia\u00adte\u00adly enters into a groo\u00adve with Gross\u00admann again on tenor dri\u00adving the num\u00adber through a sea\u00adring 4 minu\u00adte solo, han\u00adding over to Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic who\u00adse intri\u00adca\u00adte, sinuous gui\u00adtar line is fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by Boquera solo\u00ading on Ham\u00admond and the enti\u00adre 12 minu\u00adte expe\u00adri\u00adence held tog\u00ade\u00adther by Stamenkovic\u2019s snap\u00adping and spar\u00adk\u00adling drum work. The clo\u00adsing num\u00adber on Side I, \u2018Uni\u00adson Unvei\u00adled\u2019 is this rare psy\u00adche\u00adde\u00adlic R\u2019n\u2019B gem straight from the 1967 sum\u00admer of love, with Gross\u00admann play\u00ading through on sopra\u00adno sax and edging towards ecsta\u00adsy. Who said spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal jazz can\u2019t&nbsp;dance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">The first num\u00adber on Side <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span>, \u2018Ulti\u00adma\u00adte Awa\u00adre\u00adness\u2019, beg\u00adins with haun\u00adting bass-end Ham\u00admond, light cym\u00adbal tou\u00adch\u00ades, spar\u00adse gui\u00adtar, harp arpeg\u00adgi\u00ados and medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon bell, lea\u00adding to slow sul\u00adtry lines of sopra\u00adno sax, han\u00adding over half way through to a com\u00adpel\u00adling and blue\u00adsy gui\u00adtar solo by Milo\u00adj\u00adko\u00advic, fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by a slin\u00adky Ham\u00admond run by Boquera, with Stamenkovic\u2019s res\u00adtrai\u00adned and light punc\u00adtua\u00adti\u00adon throug\u00adhout, the who\u00adle ending with medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon bell and harp fading into silence. Beau\u00adtiful. Medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon bell is also the first sound on the next track \u2018Eter\u00adnal Laugh\u00adter\u2019, with Gross\u00admann ente\u00adring on flu\u00adte, then swit\u00adching to alto saxo\u00adpho\u00adne, and Sta\u00admen\u00adko\u00advic kicking up the pace to dance fever once more. The joy of this num\u00adber reminds us that laugh\u00adter has its place in both con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adti\u00adon and in our tog\u00ade\u00adther\u00adness. Our being tog\u00ade\u00adther in midst of this cra\u00adzy&nbsp;life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: calibri; color: #339966;\">The album clo\u00adser \u2018Poin\u00adting Out, Part <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span>\u2019 has Gross\u00admann retur\u00adning to tenor for a slow, medi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adve solo atop a mar\u00adching rhythm sus\u00adtained by drums, gui\u00adtar and Ham\u00admond.
